One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.
On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”
“It was great, Dad.”
“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.
“Oh yeah,” said the son.
“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.
The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.
“We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
“We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs.
“We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”
The boy’s father was speechless.
Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”

jennyndesign on the hip
jennyndesign on Etsy
Designer- Jennifer Nguyen
I am a loyal fan of artisans and indie designers. Even before I became someone who creates with their hands, I always (from a youth) had a love for all things handmade. Sites like Etsy, social networks, and nings make it hard on a sista, because my list of Indies To Support never ends. I use my list to purchase gifts and for my personal splurges. Speaking of splurges....
I received my jennyndesign Hipster in the mail today! Jenny and I follow each other on Twitter. The other night she posted one of those impulse buy deals (free shipping). So I visited her site and started salivating. What can I say, I am a handbag enthusiast! I am very happy with my purchase. It is definitely well made and designed.
I purchased this little number

Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley
Snowflakes from the Great Blizzard of 1888

That's right! These are actual snowflakes taken from the Great Blizzard of 1888, and this framed photograph will only cost you $175.
The other day in Social Studies, the warrior princesses (me too) learned about Wilson Bentley. As a young child, Bentley became fascinated with snowflakes, because he heard that 'no two snowflakes are the same'. At the age of 17 his parents purchased him a camera with a microscope. Now you know his parents must of saw how interested he was in this science, because they took all their savings to purchase this camera. This was back in the 1800's, so this camera had to cost a good "mint". Nothing like parents who care about their child's education. Wilson Bentley was the first person to ever photograph a single snow crystal.
"Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others. Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind."Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley 1925

Snowflake from February 2, 1926
According to abcteach.com, Bentley did not copyright his photographs. They are in the public domain and can be found in many places for free.

More Than A Banana Skirt
Today the Warrior Princesses finished the biography of Josephine Baker. It took 7 months, but who is counting. They took their time taking turns reading the pages of each chapter. From what I gather when listening to their "sister-time" conversations, I believe that Josephine's rise from poverty to stardom to poverty, spy work for the French, Rainbow Tribe, marriages, position in the Civil Rights Movement, fight against discrimination, and close relationships with dignitaries and world leaders, will always be remembered by the Warrior Princesses.
Other inspirational women read about today:
Annie Malone. Before Sarah Breedlove (aka Madame CJ Walker), there was hair extraordinaire Annie Malone. A true entrepreneur and inventor of the hot comb, Annie started her business by going door-to-door to sell her product (Poro). Next she opened the first "black" cosmetology school in America. Annie Malone soon had 200 employees under her wing. Read more about Annie's life, her school's curriculum, and why her business failed here.
Dr. Lenora Fulani. Lenora was the first "black" woman officially qualified to run for President of the United States of America in the years 1988 and 1992. Read more about Dr. Lenora Fulani here.

African Critters
Have you read this book?
National Geographic-African Critters
Photography and text by Robert B. Haas

Wildlife photographer, Robert Haas went on his first safari at the age of 47. With his photographic eye he captured the most amazing, high-def pictures that I have ever seen in a book. I could enjoy this book just for the photographs alone, but his firsthand accounts are adventurous and pulled me and the warrior princesses in. I borrowed this book from the library, but I may purchase it to grace my coffee table.

What Are You Up To?
It has been awhile since I posted any real thought about my life (is sweet). I have been so busy with the business and such during these past weeks, when the weekend rolls around I don't even think about the computer. Anyway, the schedule for lessons has been somewhat off. We went to Vegas for 10 days, returned and got caught up in the jet lag syndrome (up all night, could not get out of bed in the morning), and then warrior princess T picked up a germ in theater class (so 48 hours taken there). We are getting back on track, but as always one of the beauties of being self-employed and homeschooling is when situations like these arise.
Did you get a chance to see the Vegas Boogie Trailer below? That was footage taken from our trip. Hopefully I will post pictures soon.
Have you seen a good movie lately? In this month alone I have seen Mongol (excellent), Speed Racer (love how this movie was filmed), High School Musical 3 (I love musicals, this really was a pleaser), and Forbidden Kingdom (excellent).
Well, I need to go now. Taking girls to science class.
This picture has nothing to do with this post. I just wanted to share it with you. This picture was taken at an Indian restaurant on our trip to Hilton Head this year.
